LIVING IN FOREST LAKE MN
LIFESTYLE & LOCAL COMMUNITY GUIDE
A local guide to the places, activities, lake life, food, events and everyday experiences that make Forest Lake home.
WHAT IS IT LIKE TO LIVE IN FOREST LAKE?
Forest Lake combines North Metro convenience with a lifestyle that is still strongly connected to the water, outdoors and local community. The lake is a major part of daily life, but living here is about more than boating. Residents have access to local restaurants and coffee shops, parks and trails, community events, youth activities, shopping and year-round recreation.
One of the things I like about Forest Lake is how much the experience changes with the season. Summer can mean time on the lake, beaches, patios and community events. Fall brings trails and outdoor activities, while winter shifts toward ice fishing, snow activities and the traditions that come with living in Minnesota.
Forest Lake is also well positioned for people who want access to the Twin Cities while staying close to communities such as Hugo, Wyoming, Scandia, Columbus and the St. Croix Valley.
This page is my growing local guide to actually living in Forest Lake, not simply buying a home here.
FOREST LAKE RESTAURANTS & LOCAL FAVORITES
Forest Lake has a good mix of locally rooted places to eat, especially around Lake Street, Broadway and the lake. You can have dinner near the water, grab breakfast or coffee in the morning, or find an easy local lunch without leaving town.
Mallards Southern Kitchen is a popular Lake Street stop for seafood and Southern-inspired dishes. ZOUKMAYA brings Latin American flavors to a lakeside setting, while Soha’s Cafe is a local option for Mediterranean food, gyros and shawarma. The Old Log Cabin has been part of the area’s casual dining scene for years, and Keys Cafe & Bakery and Coffeesmith are familiar choices for breakfast and coffee.
The local restaurant scene keeps changing, too. Shore Side recently became Station61 Bar & Grill, which is exactly why I want this guide to stay current rather than become another outdated list of places that have changed names or closed.
THINGS TO DO IN FOREST LAKE
One of the reasons Forest Lake works well for people who like being outdoors is that there is always something different to do depending on the season.
Lakeside Memorial Park is one of the community’s main gathering places, with lake access, green space and events right in town. Forest Lake also has a larger parks-and-trails system than many people realize; the city currently maintains 23 parks, 18 open spaces, 14 playgrounds and 13 ball fields.
The lake itself is obviously a big part of recreation, but it is not the whole story. Local trails, parks, youth sports, community events and seasonal activities all add to everyday life here. The city also hosts recurring events including Arts in the Park, the Fourth of July celebration, Hometown Holiday and the Farmers Market.
PARKS, BEACHES & TRAILS IN FOREST LAKE
Forest Lake has more outdoor space than many people realize, and some of the best spots are woven right into everyday life around town.
Lakeside Memorial Park sits in the heart of downtown on the shore of Forest Lake. It includes a beach, playground, picnic areas, walking paths, a gazebo, lake access and a public-use dock, so it works just as well for a quick stop as it does for spending an afternoon by the water. Forest Lake, MN
The Hardwood Creek Regional Trail adds another side of the outdoor lifestyle here. The paved trail runs through Forest Lake and connects south toward Hugo and north to the Sunrise Prairie Trail, making it useful for biking, walking and longer recreational rides. Washington County MN
Between the lake, local parks and the trail system, Forest Lake gives residents plenty of ways to get outside without having to plan a full day trip.
LIFE ON FOREST LAKE
Forest Lake is more than a backdrop for the city. It shapes a lot of the way people spend their free time here.
In the
warmer months, that can mean boating, fishing, swimming, paddleboarding, docks and time along the shoreline. The Minnesota DNR lists multiple public access points on Forest Lake, including access on 1st Lake and 3rd Lake, and the lake remains a popular fishing destination for species including walleye, northern pike, bass and muskellunge. Minnesota DNR
Winter changes the lake completely. Ice fishing becomes part of the local rhythm, and the DNR specifically notes early-season walleye fishing as a popular winter use. Minnesota DNR
For homeowners, though, lake life is about more than recreation. Shoreline, water depth, lake-bottom conditions, views, elevation, dock use and where a property sits on the lake can all affect how a waterfront home feels and how buyers value it
COMMUNITY EVENTS & LOCAL TRADITIONS
Forest Lake has several community events that people tend to recognize year after year, especially around downtown and Lakeside Memorial Park.
Arts in the Park brings together local vendors, food, a farmers market and live entertainment during the summer. The city also hosts a multi-day Fourth of July celebration with a parade, carnival, live music and fireworks over Forest Lake. Hometown Holiday returns later in the year, and the city now runs a Saturday Farmers Market at City Hall during the warmer months. Forest Lake, MN
These events are part of what gives Forest Lake more of a community feel than simply being another North Metro suburb. They bring people downtown, support local businesses and give residents reasons to gather throughout the year.
THINGS TO DO WITH KIDS IN FOREST LAKE
Forest Lake has plenty of options when you’re looking for something simple to do with kids close to home. The city maintains 23 parks and 14 playgrounds, along with ball fields, trails and seasonal recreation throughout the community. Forest Lake, MN
Lakeside Memorial Park gives you the beach, playground and lakefront in one stop, while places like Beltz Park and Kulenkamp Park add playgrounds, sports courts, ball fields, picnic areas and trails. In winter, the city maintains outdoor skating at Beltz Park and Tower Park, including warming houses when conditions allow. Forest Lake, MN
The city also maintains a recreation directory with youth sports, elementary and secondary recreation programs, the Forest Lake YMCA, community activities and other seasonal options. Forest Lake, MN
WINTER IN FOREST LAKE
Forest Lake changes quite a bit once winter settles in. The lake becomes part of the season in a different way, with ice fishing, outdoor skating and winter recreation replacing boats, beaches and summer events.
Forest Lake is a popular ice-fishing lake, especially for early-season walleye, and the Minnesota DNR lists additional winter access points specifically for ice anglers. Minnesota DNR
The city also maintains outdoor skating at Beltz Park and Tower Park during the winter. Beltz is set up for recreational skating, while Tower Park includes recreational skating and hockey rinks, with warming houses available during scheduled hours when conditions allow. Forest Lake, MN
What I like about Forest Lake is that winter does not shut the community down, it simply changes how people use it. The lake, parks and outdoor spaces stay part of daily life, just in a very Minnesota way.
SHOPPING & EVERYDAY CONVENIENCES IN FOREST LAKE
Forest Lake has enough everyday shopping and services that most routine errands can be handled without leaving town.
Along the main commercial areas you’ll find major retailers such as Target and Walmart, grocery options, pharmacies, home-improvement stores and other day-to-day services. Forest Lake also has locally owned shops and specialty businesses, boutiques, particularly around the older commercial areas near downtown and Lake Street. Target’s Forest Lake location, for example, includes grocery, CVS Pharmacy and other everyday services in one stop.
I also think the mix of national retailers and smaller local businesses matters. The Forest Lake Area Chamber currently maintains a local retail directory with specialty shops, home-and-garden businesses, gifts and other independent businesses around the area
FOREST LAKE NEIGHBORHOODS & HOUSING
Forest Lake has a wider mix of housing than people sometimes expect. You’ll find older homes close to downtown and the lake, established residential neighborhoods, townhomes, newer construction, acreage on the edges of town and waterfront properties across Forest Lake’s three connected basins.
That variety is one reason two homes with similar square footage can feel very different here. Location, lot size, neighborhood setting, proximity to the lake, updates, shoreline characteristics and even which part of Forest Lake you’re on can all affect how buyers look at a property.
When I’m helping someone move to Forest Lake, I usually start with how they actually want to live—not simply the number of bedrooms. Someone who wants walkability to downtown, someone looking for more land, and someone who wants a dock in the backyard may all be searching in completely different parts of the same community.
THINKING ABOUT MOVING TO FOREST LAKE?
Forest Lake can feel very different depending on where you live, what type of home you want and how important things like lake access, lot size, neighborhood setting, schools, commuting and nearby amenities are to you.
If you’re considering a move here, I can help you compare different parts of Forest Lake, understand the local housing market and narrow down the areas that fit how you actually want to live.
READY TO MAKE FOREST LAKE HOME?
Whether you’re buying your first home, moving within the area, looking for more space, or considering waterfront property, I can help you understand the local market and make the process easier to navigate.
I work with buyers and sellers throughout Forest Lake and the North Metro, with a focus on clear communication, local knowledge and helping you make informed decisions from the first conversation through closing.
